I obtained an “untested” Fusion 8100 on FB Marketplace for practically nothing, looking for a fun project. It came with literally nothing but the receiver itself. After meeting up with the seller, I instantly noticed a few things: holy shit this thing was dense, it felt solid, and visually, I could see a bulging electrolytic capacitor through the top cover.
I asked the seller something along the lines of “so untested means not working? its fine if so, I am looking for a fun project” and he explained that he has never tried to use it. A person was having a moving sale, and he could take whatever furniture or items in the house for $500. He was able to get a ton of furniture, and grabbed some random hi-fi things as well. He got 2 receivers, and always used the other one. This one has sat for years in his garage, taking up space since that moving sale, and he wanted it gone. I knew that this meant he plugged in the receiver and it didn’t immediately work, so he listed it as untested. So, I loaded it into the car.

I got it home, and plugged it in to power with my safety squints engaged. I was ready for the worst, but had to know if it would do anything or not. The standby light faintly illuminated, and it began doing a startup routine; there was a relay click and the light began flashing, before it clicked again and stopped. I pressed the power button, and to my disappointment (but absolutely no surprise), it froze on a loading screen.

I ended up replacing a few random capacitors on what I assume is a digital and standby power supply. This fixed one of the issues; it was now booting! No more constant loading screen. I plugged in a speaker, and it was working! Or so I thought.

Shortly after this began working… it stopped. Upon power up, it would sit on that damn loading screen again. I noticed that a status LED on the digital board in the back was not illuminating. Probing a 3.3 V rail on that board yielded less than a volt. After confirming all power rails were up going into the board, I headed to Google to see what I could find (save myself from extra work if possible). I found this which lead to thvis. The second this confirmed most of the capacitors I already replaced, and the first this was a good clue.
After re-flowing the solder joints on the regulator, the receiver worked again! Success! All sunshine and rainbows from here on out!!!!

Or so I thought.
Regularly, the receiver would randomly stick on the loading screen again. The act of removing the top cover would fix it. Something is caddywampus with that chassis, resulting in a broken connection somewhere on that board. I will be attempting to resolve this at some point in the future, because we need to take a detour to the other issue I found.
At the time of writing, I just moved out of my apartment in the Northeast and back to the Midwest. I carefully buckled that brick of receiver into the backseat of my car, and got it inside when I got to my parents. I wanted to stretch it’s legs, since I had only ever used the bottom end of the volume knob in my apartment.
It sounded good, until I made it up about a third the volume knob. There was distortion. As I increased the volume more and more, the distortion got significantly worse.
I suspect it is the filter caps on the linear supply for the amplifier. I have not tested them yet. Will update when I do.
As I continue this journey, I will be updating this page with what I find next.
